Abstract |

Recent awareness of the toxic effects and sources of heavy metal pollution, as well as advances in detection techniques and environmental chemistry, have brought this topic to the forefront of the scientific community. High concentrations of heavy metals become a health concern when they are found to be moving from a contaminant source into groundwater sources, crops, and anything else that comes into direct contact with humans or animals. Thus, it is important to properly dispose of and monitor materials that may potentially leach heavy metals into the surrounding environment. It is because of this reason that the use of soil ameliorants such as bio solids and other wastes are debated. Although these resources can provide excellent results with regard to increased crop and plant yield, they are also potential sources of heavy metal contamination that may, under right conditions, translocate to the crops they help grow or into the groundwater. Jeddah which is a coastal settlement and transit point for eastern trade has expanded and continues to expand at an unpredictable rate. The population is currently about 3.5 million people. One of new residential areas in Jeddah is located in the neighborhood of the Sewage Lake, one of the largest sources of pollution, located east of the city. Twenty three samples were collected from different areas surrounding the lake. The samples were

analyzed by ICP-OES (Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy) for the elements As, Co, Cr, Cd, Pb, V, Ni, Zn, and Hg after digestion by aqua regia and microwave and after extraction with deionized water. Since the concentration of heavy metals in soil samples is usually less than 100mg/kg, the efficiency of washing by EDTA was also studied. Generally the concentrations of heavy metals were found to be different in different areas, heavy metals in this study in the three areas above of the tolerable level. Thus we have an indication that the study areas contaminated with heavy metals except Pb. Cd is not detect (ND) in all samples and the results obtained by aqua regia digestion were found to be better than by microwave digestion. |
