This thesis demonstrates the concept of Arabic Labial and apical constants (Aldhlāqahالذلاقة ) and the most significant early and contemporary views of linguists about the Arabic labial and apical sounds according to the various approaches. The purpose of this study is to highlight the nature of Aldhlāqah sounds in Arabic by identifying their phonetic features and semantic functions, as well as the rules and issues of sound changing through a systematic and objective study based on the findings of contemporary linguistics in the field of phonetics.The research was divided into an introduction then a preface, five chapters and a conclusion.
In the preface, two subjects were discussed: the first subject is the early principles of classifying sounds, and the second one is the principles of classifying the sounds into constants and vowels, which addresses their fundamental differences. The preface also includes definitions of the terms mentioned in the thesis.
The first chapter :A study of Knowledge of Aldhlaqh Sounds, which examines three themes: the first, involves the early and contemporary concept and term of Aldhlāqah. The second, involves the definition of the word Aldhlāqah by the grammarians, scholars and lexicologists. The third: involves the principles of classifying Aldhlāqah sounds.
The second chapter:The Articulators and Features of Aldhlāqah Sounds, which deals with three themes: The first is about the articulators and features, which provides an overview of the articulators associated with this group of sounds in details and some related contemporary issues. The second is entitled:The Succession of Aldhlāqah Sounds. It considers the similarities and differences between the phonemic relations and the occurred alterations. The theme also defines the constraints on the constant sounds that precede or succeed Aldhlāqah sounds according to Lisān al-ʿArab) لسان العرب The Arab Tongue) Dictionary.The third theme is entitled:Aldhlāqah Sounds in the Semitic Languages. It addresses a contrastive study of Aldhlāqah (labial and apical) Sounds in the Semitic languages regarding to the articulators, features and functions.
The Third Chapter: The Prevalence of Aldhlāqah Sounds in Standard Arabic. This chapter has three themes consisting of a statistical
study of the prevalence of Aldhlāqah sounds in Standard Arabic texts, which is supported by texts from the Holy Qura'an, Hadiths (sayings or acts of the Prophet Muhammad), some of Alsehah speeches (الصحاح The Authentic Six) and an anthology of ancient Arabic poems called the Mufaddaliyat المفضليات)The Examination of al-Mufaddal).
The fourth chapter: The Phonetic Functions. It includes two subjects: The first subject focuses on one of the principles of parsimony in linguistics which is "disuniting the gemination" of some constants by one of Aldhlāqah sounds.The second subject draws on the surplus sounds in Arabic which associate the original structure of the word.The third subject investigates the metathesis of these sounds.
Finally, deals with the grammatical function. The aim of this chapter is to highlight the grammatical patterns function.
The conclusion indicates the significant results of this study, some of which are the following: The phonetic aspect is authentic in Arabic in view of the emergence of the phonetic rules in ancient Arabic literature. Furthermore, the term Aldhlāqah in Arabic is equivalent to a conceptual term in Alkhaleel's dictionary; it is defined as a tip of something or the eloquence, or both. However, Aldhlāqah phonemes are simple segmental constants, i.e. it is not combined. They also have preceding and succeeding constraints. Furthermore, all the Semitic languages share the Arabic Language in including these sounds among their fundamental sounds which have a plenty of assimilated characteristics. Moreover, these Aldhlāqah sounds have many phonetic, morphological, grammatical and semantic functions which are discussed in this thesis extensively |
